NATS LA SONGFEST PARTICIPANT RAEJIN LEE
At the Fall Symposium we heard a presentation from Dr.Raejin Lee (Director of Vocal Studies at La Sierra University).Dr. Lee discussed her experience this summer at SongFest. Next year will be the 20th anniversary of SongFest, a premier art song summer program (thanks to Rosemary Hyler Ritter and her ability to bring in world class musicians and teachers). This year they added a new program especially for college teachers called SongFest Professional Development Program, directed by Margo Garrett (Juilliard), AND they awarded a full scholarship to a NATS LA member. Dr. Raejin Lee was awarded the scholarship from a field of several applicants. She explained that this “PD” program provides 1) support for college faculty in their teaching and performing, 2) opportunities to perform and present short lectures at a professional program, and 3) learn and network with other college teachers from around the country. The 2015 resident composers were Libby Larsen, John Musto and Jake Heggie. Raejin was full of exuberance when talking about the excitement of learning from these composers first hand. Other professionals were Dawn Upshaw, Susanne Mentzer, Sanford Sylvan, Graham Johnson and of course Martin Katz. Raejin’s lecture/recital was titled:”Korean Art Song Revisited: A Guide to Diction and Style”. At our Symposium she also sang two Korean songs and explained her research into these beautiful art songs.
The PD program is only one of four programs available to all levels of teachers and singers: Professional, Young Artist, Studio Artist and Professional Development. SongFest is held at the Colburn School in Los Angeles, their 2016 dates and applications are already on their website: www.songfest.us., and there is a flyer with more information on the PD program available on our NATS LA website. This is a great opportunity for our own NATS LA members. Thank you Raejin for an informative presentation.
